sex education questionnaire for uk

April 2, 2009

Hi, I am a university student, writing a research essay on teen pregnancy rates and sex education in the UK. I am posting online questionnaires in order to get public responses to my questions as well as academics studying in the field. I have just 6 questions to be answered, and if you could take the time, I’d be most greatful.

Jersey-Emma

Questionnaire on sex education and teen pregnancy in the UK:
• Have you noticed an increase in teen pregnancies in the last decade?
-if yes then why do you think this is?

• What do you think about the current forms of sex education?

• At what age do you think sex education should be taught and why?

• Were you taught sex education when you were at school?

• How does your sex education compare with how it is taught today?

• The law across the UK says that the legal age to have sex is 16-do you think this is right?

2nd politics story for portfolio.

April 23, 2008

have been waiting until i got feedback from the other on before i put the last two politics stories up, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen any time soon, so here’s the 2nd of the three.

2008 UK Budget

FIGURES WERE released today for the 2008 Government Budget.

It has been confirmed that the 2p tax rise on fuel is to go ahead, but that it is to be put back until October. Also, as of 2009 there is to be a higher tax for owners of more polluting cars.

Alcohol prices are on the rise again, as 14p is added to a bottle of wine, 4p on a pint of beer, and 55p  is to be added to a bottle of spirit. These prices are up 6% on inflation. This is and attempt to help combat binge drinking in the UK.

Chief Economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Dr John Philpott said, “With real incomes already being squeezed and consumers cutting back on spending it won’t just be the patrons of bars and restaurants who are crying over their drinks tonight.”

There will however, be a rise in child benefit as of April 2009. The amount for the 1st child will rise to £20 per week, and the Winter Fuel payment has increased from £200-£280 for over 60′s and from £300 up to £400 for over 80′s.

It has been suggested that ther should be a law to put a tax on plastic bags if shops don’t start charging for their use, while an extra £2 billion is to be spent on troops in the font line.

Shadow Chancellor George Osborne said “This is a bad news Budget. Alistair Darling is kicking Britain’s families when they are down.”

blogs.

April 2, 2008

hi everyone.

I am one of the people that chris outlined as not writing on the blogs much over the easter break. i have been working fulkl time, and haven’t really had time to get on to my computer, being only one in the house.

however, i also felt there wasn’t much point as we were informed we’d get feedback on what we wrote that would help with our writing, and though i have written little, i have received only one comment which repeated what chris had said to me in a seminar anyway.

So… if anyone does have any useful input for me about my work please let me know-even if it is to say it’s crap.

see you all soon and hope you’ve had a good break.

Developer’s to be made to make better communications to Local Residents.

BASINGSTOKE MP Maria Miller is calling for better communication to be made between developers and local residents. The request was made following trouble over roadworks near a building site in Buckskin.Residents near the building site on Old Kempshott Lane, criticised builders for a lack of notice being given about road works taking place.

Locals received a letter from Barratt Southern Counties, the developers of the site, detailing that two new entrances were due to be made last monday. The work has meant that two sets of temporary traffic lights have been set up, meanwhile work on sewer connections has begun. However, residents believe that the developers are also undergoing work on the roads themselves, making changes that would affect their access to their own properties.A resident from Old Kempshott Lane, Lynn Deevoy said: “the neighbours were given two days to move their cars!” and she believes that the work on the roads will take place, without planning permission, and is thought to take six weeks to complete. Residents contacted Mrs Miller and local councillors, who raised their concerns at a meeting with staff from the developer on Friday. Mrs Miller has also written to the chief executive at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council requesting urgent attention to the issue. Mrs Miller said: “What it all comes down to is very poor communication. It’s clear that the residents are under the impression that work is being carried out without proper consultation. Perhaps it is time that we look at the protocol for future developments, so that we can protect the interest of our existing residents.”Hampshire County Council have confirmed the contractor has obtained a licence for the sewer connection, but no permission has been granted for roadworks.Barratt Southern Counties have denied allegations that unauthorised work has been carried out on their site.Managing director Trevor Sawyer said: “We have received approval from Hampshire County Council to carry out roadworks relating to the drainage connections. A meeting has already been planned with the local council and residents to discuss the ways in which to minimise the disruption to the local community and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

SENTENCE PASSED ON FATHER AND SON.

SENTENCE was passed today on a father and son, following their attack on Luke Berry in early September 2007. Alan David Alec Burns, 58 yrs old and his son Wayne David Burns, 38 yrs, appeared for sentencing today at Winchester Crown Court, after being found guilty by a jury.
The father and son attacked one of Alan’s co-workers at “Clear Water”, a drainage company, following Alan and Luke having a heated arguement. The defence for Alan, Miss. Duncan, put forward her case that the attack on luke was very out of character and she repeated a quote made by Alan’s partner who said “he’s a working man, used to sorting out problems in his own way.” she also said that this normally meant staying within the law. Justice George.T.Longbotham, who was residing over the sentencing today said that considering his age, health and clear record for previous offences, that he was inclined to give “a suspended sentence in the circumstances”.

Given the fact that Alan didn’t instigate the attack, and that he had no previous record, Justice Longbotham gave him a suspended sentence of 32 weeks, with a 2 year suspension and 120 hrs unpaid work. Wayne was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison, with an extended licence order of 15 months, neither were made to pay compensation to Mr.Berry.
Although it was Alan who gave the final blow to Luke; a kick to the head, which subsequently knocked him unconcious, it was Wayne who started the attack. Wayne has currently been serving a 5 month custodial sentence, after breaking the licence agreement which was made following one of his previous convictions, this one being a Actual Bodily Harm charge for harming his partner.
Mr. Griffiths, defending Wayne, put it forward to Justice Longbotham that these 5 months had already paid part of his debt to society.
While sentencing, Justice Longbotham said that they were very lucky that they had caused no permenant damage to Mr. Berry or they would be facing a “serious assault charge” he said their acts had been “extremely dangerous” and that Wayne was “a man of Violence”.

people and politics week 2

February 12, 2008

Hi,

Just had the second lecture and seminar-which i made on time!!!! : D Although we had an initial problem with the room, and a misunderstanding about readings etc. everything looks as though it will now go smoothly for the module. This week we’ve been asked to do an array of things with our blogs: discuss the relationship between Kanye West, Frederick Nitsche, Thomas Hobbes, Mad Max and the Rule of Law; write up a story of a press release from the Downing Street website; and last but not least give a general opinion or thought on whatever really.

Firstly, the link between Kanye West and Nitsche is that in Kanye West’s latest single entitled “Stronger”, Kanye quotes Nitsche “now-th-that don’t kill me
Can only make me stronger…”. This opinion voiced by Nitsche connects to Hobbes’ opposing view that you shouldn’t be controlled by a government and should have the right to freedom in all areas for yourself, whilst the Mad Max persona presents to us what would happen if Hobbes’ dream was a reality, which then relates to the Rule of Law – no one’s above the law.

Personally i agree partially with everyone, i do think it almost always will come down to everyman for himself, but at the same time that’s why we need laws and rules etc. they give us a guidance and direction to follow, which many people may feel they need. On the other hand, we’ve all grown up in a world where there simply were rules and regulations, so maybe if they weren’t there to begin with people wouldn’t rely on them so critically.

Now for the news story!!!!

 Higher Fuel Charges

AN EXTRA 2p in fuel duty is to be paid by drivers as set out in a new budget drafted by the government. The Prime Minister’s Secretary-Jeremy Heywood says that “we mst take into account the whole budgetas a package, and not just single out elements.” The 2p increase in fuel duty is said to cover the cost of the 2p cut in income tax and therefore will benefit more people in the long run. There will be a reduced excise duty for “enviromentally friendly” cars aswell as hauliers

Heywood denied the accusation that the reduction of the income tax had been wiped out by another rise and said that “there is a £3 billion transfer from indirect taxes to pay for an overall reduction in direst taxes” so, overall the budget comes out as neutral.

In order to make this a balanced story, i would speak to the head of trade unions such as the TSSA (Transport Salaried Staff’s Association) and FBU (Fire Brigades Union)-amongst other emergency services, to see how the increase in fuel costs was affecting their work and efficiency etc. I would expect to find that there was a general discomfort about the price rise, despite the likelyhood of expences being paid as it would cause an inconvenience.

about me

February 5, 2008

Hi, my name’s Jersey, i am currently a first year studying single honours journalism at the University of Winchester. I have currently been late for two Tuesday lectures due to a Pizza Hut rush, combined with a lack of reliable transport, so will be endeavouring to make lectures on time in the event of anymore pre-lecture hut visits.

I have just had my first lecture for the People and Politics module, whis has given me background knowledge about the British institution and a bit about parliament in general, which i look forward to finding out more about in subsequent lectures.

I’ve been asked to edit this blog-though I think it defeats the object if I’m changing my “thoughts” on something to suit anothers needs-does this help?

I don’t really have anything to add as I feel there is enough information about me already scrawled accross the internet.

Other than that I am now off to bed as have work in the morning, however, will request that if comments be made they be usful ones giving oppinion or tips on the stories I have written which I haven’t really received much of yet.

see you all after easter,

love J XXX
